Soichi Noriki
Piano / Synthesizer Player / Composer / Arranger
Born in Kyoto in 1957
Noriki studied classical piano from a young age, but became enamoured of jazz from his early teenage years. In 1974, he joined the big band led by his father, a saxophone player, and started his career as a pianist.
He launched his own band NORIKI in 1983, and released four albums. Noriki was with Sadao Watanabe's band for 10 years from 1986, and participated in the Montreux Jazz Festival, U.S. tour, London tour, and Africa tour as a pianist and keyboardist.
For Watanabe's recordings Good Time for Love and A Night with Strings, Noriki participated as an arranger, pianist, and keyboardist. He has also collaborated as an arranger and performer with Japan's top jazz singers, such as Keiko Lee. In particular, Kimiko Itoh's Sophisticated Lady, where he performed with Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd, has garnered much praise.
Around the same time, he also performed with Hino Terumasa's band regularly, and participated in Joe Henderson's Japan live tour as well.
From 1991, wrote music for the late Yoshiharu Morita's films, Kitchen, and (HARU).
In 2018, Noriki released his first solo album in 30 years; Piano Solo. The following year, he released Saudade, with Sadao Watanabe as a guest artist.
He is currently at work on his third solo piano album.
